The Sound

Linda on Jan 25th 2009

I’m a scanner.  I scan the radio in the car, I channel surf the tv, and I surf the internet.  I blame Quiet Riot’s “Cum on Feel the Noize,” for my radio scanning habit.  Embarrassing, I know, but it’s oh so true.  My girlfriend and I would scan her clock radio trying to find that song.  Maybe we couldn’t afford “Metal Health” or even the single.  But I really think the thrill was stumbling upon it, cranking it up and dancing around her bedroom.  We’d sing, “Girls rock your boys, we’ll get wild, wild, wild.”  We got as wild as the little speaker in a clock radio allowed 14-year old girls to get. Goodbye Leroi (Dave Matthews Band)

Linda on Aug 22nd 2008

I searched through many Leroi Moore tribute videos on Youtube to share some of the magic I got to experience over the last twelve years. So many beautiful tributes and solos but the one video I chose to share with you is the one where I fell in love with the band. At Tuesday night’s concert, Dave Matthews told a story about LeRoi at a bar in Virginia where Roi played the most beautiful version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Dave said, “that was the day I fell in love with him. And I’m still in love with him.” I remember having a VHS tape of this Crossroads performance and watching it over and over and over again. I even remember taking it with me on several vacations. I know, at bit fanatical and that was before I attended 30 something shows. Please enjoy!

“Minutes to Memories” John Cougar Mellencamp (Greek Theater)

Linda on Aug 1st 2008

I WAS the grand prize winner! (Read this.) I was informed by a strange call from KLOS, when the employee who told me it was time to pick up my tickets, added at the last minute, “By the way, you’re the grand prize winner, so you’ll actually be picking up 4 front row tickets.” Thrilled I knew I was in for an experience of a lifetime. I attended with just three girlfriends but many more in spirit. The Greek Theater was as beautiful as I remembered it. The last show I saw there was INXS with JD Fortune, however, I was reminded of shows from at least a decade or two earlier, Steely Dan, Santana, Sting and my very first concert, Duran Duran. John Mellencamp at the Greek Theater!

Linda on May 1st 2008

I won tickets from 95.5 KLOS radio station yesterday. It all started on Tuesday when my friend emailed commanding me to listen for a chance to win Steely Dan or Santana tickets. Wednesday morning’s email said, “Today, they’re giving away Mellencamp tix.” It’s hard to focus on the radio when you’re supposed to be focused on work, so I mostly tried to win when I’d receive an email that screamed, “CALL NOW! One time I asked a friend to use my cell phone while I tried on my work phone. A co-worker asked us, “What are you doing?” I said, “Trying to win Melon Head tickets.” Continue Reading »

‘Tween “Finding Nemo” and Mustaches

Linda on Apr 1st 2008

How old will Matthew be before I won’t worry about a full glass of liquid being too close to the edge of the table? By Wikipedia’s definition, he’s a “tween.” He is between the ages of eight and twelve and doesn’t quite understand how easily he could knock that glass over. He shuns the “kids’ menus,” insisting on eating adult portions in turn, skipping the safety of sippy cups for big glasses that threaten to spill. Today, however, he asked if we could rent “Finding Nemo,” at Blockbuster, a movie that he watched when he was five years old. Interestingly, he commented that I was just like Nemo’s father, “too protective.” Continue Reading »
