More Words of Wisdom

Linda on Oct 29th 2008

The Yogi Green Tea bag I used this morning, said, “Let good things come to you.” Wow, I thought to myself, as I ripped off the little tag to cherish and to use as a reminder. I forget to practice patience sometimes and this was an interesting way to say, “Be patient.” I was told once, that even though we hear things over and over again, until we stop and say, “Ah-ha, I GET IT NOW,” we’ll keep getting reminders. Several years ago, I found a poem, about patience, that really inspired me.  The tag from the tea bag, prompted me to find it.  I realized when I found it on the internet, that I had read an abbreviated version.  I was so grateful to discover the last section.  The entire poem is truly, divinely inspired.

“The Lake of Beauty”
by Edward Carpenter

Let your mind be quiet, realizing the beauty of the world,
and the immense, the boundless treasures that it holds in store.

All that you have within you, all that your heart desires,
all that your nature so specially fits you for -
that or the counterpart of it waits embedded in the great Whole, for you.
It will surely come to you.

Yet equally surely not one moment before its appointed time
will it come. All your crying and fever and reaching out of
hands will make no difference.

Therefore do not begin that game at all.
Do not recklessly spill the waters of your mind
in this direction and in that,
lest you become like a spring lost and dissipated in the desert.

But draw them together into a little compass, and hold them still, so still;
And let them become clear, so clear - so limpid, so mirror-like;
at last the mountains and the sky shall glass themselves in peaceful beauty,
and the antelope shall to descend to drink and to gaze at her reflected image,
and the lion to quench his thirst,
and love himself shall come and bend over and catch his own likeness in you.

Celebs without Makeup

Linda on Oct 27th 2008

We went to a Halloween party dressed like this.

I’ve never worn Halloween make up before, and I can tell you it freaked me out a bit, when I went to wash my hands to find that my fingers were stained orange.  I called a friend on the way to the party and she said, “I would have washed it off.”   I answered, “We were supposed to be there a half an hour ago, I got to just go with it and pray it comes off later tonight.”  At the party, I asked the Devil, whose entire face and bald head was colored red, how to remove the make up and he suggested, soap, water and some hand sanitizer.  Luckily, the orange did wash away with soap, water and some toner with alcohol in it.  I concluded the “Devil told me to do it” because the hand sanitizer has alcohol in it.  This maybe the only time in my life, where the Devil’s advice was good advice.

p.s. It was a fabulous party.

Who Do You Want to Be Today? (Oingo Boingo)

Linda on Oct 21st 2008

Figuring out what to be for Halloween has never been one of my favorite things to do.  I’m not one of those people that goes all crazy for the holiday, like a few friends I know (Lise and Kimm).  Maybe because my name isn’t spelled funny.  Over the years, I’ve avoided Halloween parties that required costumes.  I welcomed having a child take the focus off of me, enjoying  trick or treating with him.  Luckily when I’ve attended costume parties, I’ve had friends come to my aid.  Literally, one year, my ex-husband and I attended a party in street clothes and by the end of the night, we had played musical outfits with extra costumes the hostess had. We ended up swapping hats and props and everybody was just silly, oh wait, that wasn’t even a Halloween party.  However, it was one of the funniest nights of our past lives. Continue Reading »

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Southern California is on fire again.  I love the Santa Ana winds but they get us every time.  I think of Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.,” “Santa Ana winds blowin’ hot from the north,” Steely Dan’s “Babylon Sisters,” “Here come those Santa Ana winds again,” and Janet Fitch’s novel, White Oleander, where the wind was a not only a major part of the setting but a huge influence.
